History of Tikarapada Wildlife Sanctuary
This place is famous for the Gharials(crocodiles) and other animals. The Sanctuary was established in 1975 with an area of 796 square km. In 2007, the Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and bits adjoining Baisipalli wildlife sanctuary, covering a little over 900 square km in all. The ecosystem of Mahanadi was perfect for the survival of these animals.The famed wildlife sanctuary has the River Mahnadi crossing thought it that adds to the beauty of the landscape.
In the January 2003, one male and two female gharials were sighted/ counted in and outside of the breeding centre in Tikarpada. Only 14 gharials were spotted at satkosia gorge in Tikarpada in Anugul distric 2019, according to Sudhakara kar, herpetologist and former wildlife researcher in Odiasha forest department.

On the southern side of the tiger reserve you may opt for the satkosia sands resort in Badamul, Managed by the Mahanadi wildlife Division of Satkosia Tiger reserve.

By Air – The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar Airport in Odisha, which is located at a distance of 162km.
By Train – Anugul Railway station is the nearest railway station, situated at a distance of around 70km
By Road – Travelers can reach the sanctuary by buses operated by the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation(OTDC) from Athagarh.
