Puri is not only famous for its beach and rituals but Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary adds more glory to Puri’s tourism. This Sanctuary is located along the Puri-Konark marine drive. The main attractions of the sanctuary are the Blackbuck and Spotted Deer.

Exploring Wild Animals

This Sanctuary, inaugurated in 1984 and located in Odisha, spans an area of 87 km². Stretching from Banki Muhana in Puri to Keluni Muhana near Daluakani, the sanctuary is traversed by rivers like Nuanai, Kusabhadra, Kadua, and Prachi.

BlacKbuck

Blackbucks are antelopes that thrive in grassy plains and lightly forested areas with perennial water sources. They possess slender and elegant bodies, along with pointed and delicate hooves. Male Blackbucks sport horns that are ringed at the base, twisted in a spiral with up to four turns.

Spotted deer

Spotted deer

Chital, also known as the spotted deer, features a golden body color adorned with white spots on its underbelly. Their diet primarily consists of grasses. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to various other species including monkeys, squirrels, jungle cats, hyenas, jackals, mongooses, as well as a diverse array of birds, reptiles, and olive ridley sea turtles.

Konark Temple

Konark Sun Temple, a marvel of Eastern India, is a symbol of India’s heritage and a top tourist spot. It’s a massive temple dedicated to the Sun God. “Konark” means “Sun of the Corner” in the local language. The temple is in the northeastern corner of Puri. Three images of the Sun God face different directions to catch the sun’s rays in morning, noon, and evening. This temple is approximately 22.22 km away from the sanctuary.

Ramachandi Temple

Ramachandi Temple sits by the Kusabhadra River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal. The goddess Ramachandi is highly revered here. It’s a popular spot for sailing, swimming, and sunbathing on golden sands lined with palm trees. You can also sail on traditional boats along the vast coastline. This temple is approximately 17.8 km away from the sanctuary.

Chandrabhaga

Chandrabhaga Beach is near Konark Temple and is significant for its religious events. Every year, a fair honoring the Sun God lasts for seven days in Magha. It’s believed the Sun God healed Sri Krishna’s son here. People from around the world visit to bathe in the holy waters and pray to the sun. Chandrabhaga Beach was the first in Asia to get a Blue Flag Certification on World Environment Day. This beach is approximately 19 km away from the sanctuary.
